Why we are building SLIK.

The gap we are closing

We like what the new tools make possible. We run coding agents, we install packages, we let software index our machines. Every one of those grants is a read permission over a disk that also holds tax returns, passport scans, client work, and family records — all of it in plaintext, because that is the default a sync folder gives you.

Encrypting file contents on the device before they are stored is an old idea and a boring one. It is also the difference between an over-permissioned process finding your documents and finding a directory of ciphertext. SLIK exists to make that the normal way to keep files, on a Mac, without making you think about keys.

What it is

SLIK is a native file manager for macOS, with an iPhone app in development. The encryption core is written in Rust, the app in SwiftUI, and the service behind it in Go. File contents are encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM; search runs against a local index so that finding a file does not require handing anything to a server.

We are deliberate about the claims on this site. SLIK protects file contents at rest. It does not detect or block malware, and it does not sandbox or monitor other software on your machine. The security page sets out the boundary and its limits in full.

Where it stands

SLIK is in development. The Mac build is the focus, the iPhone app follows, and we have not claimed an independent audit or certification because we have not had one. When that changes, it will say so here.
